UK Student Visa Processing Time 2026
Most UK Student visa decisions arrive within three weeks when you apply from outside the UK. This guide covers the standard timings, the paid options that speed them up, when to submit your application, and the things that most often cause delays.
Standard processing times

The clock starts at your biometric appointment or identity verification through the ID Check app — not at the moment you pay. Booking the appointment promptly is the part of the timeline you control.
Priority services
- Priority service — £500: a decision usually within five working days
- Super priority service — £1,000: a decision usually by the end of the next working day
Availability varies by country and visa application centre, and these services are sometimes suspended during peak periods. You buy them when you apply; they cannot be added later. Note that they speed up the decision, not any part of the process before it — a missing document still stalls the application.
When should you apply?
From outside the UK you can apply up to six months before your course start date, and you should aim to apply as soon as you have your CAS and your financial evidence is ready. Working backwards from a late September start:
- May–June: accept your offer, pay the deposit, start holding your maintenance funds
- June–July: receive your CAS, complete the 28-day fund-holding period
- July: apply online, pay the fee and the healthcare surcharge, book biometrics
- August: decision arrives, arrange travel and accommodation
Remember the two constraints that pull in opposite directions: a CAS expires after six months, and your financial evidence must close within 31 days of applying. Applying six to eight weeks before travel is the usual sweet spot.
What causes delays
- Missing or unclear documents — the most common cause; the Home Office will write to you, adding weeks
- ATAS clearance not obtained before applying
- A credibility interview being scheduled
- Peak season — June to September, when most applications are submitted
- Documents needing verification with a third party, such as a bank or a previous institution

Can you travel while waiting?
If you applied from outside the UK, your passport is usually held at the visa application centre while the application is processed, so international travel is not normally possible. If you applied from inside the UK to extend or switch, you may remain here lawfully on your existing conditions while the decision is pending, but leaving the UK withdraws the application.
After the decision
Approved applicants receive a digital eVisa linked to their passport — physical BRP cards are no longer issued. You create a UKVI account, link your passport, and use the "view and prove" service to show your status to your university, employer or landlord. Check your work conditions there before accepting any job.
