How is Student visa IHS calculated?
The student rate is £776 per year. Permission is charged in six-month blocks: a partial block generally costs £388. An application from outside the UK for permission of six months or less has no IHS; the corresponding inside-UK charge is £388. More than six months but less than a year costs £776. Worked examples: permission length, not course length
- 12 months of permission: £776 IHS + £558 application = £1,334.
- 16 months of permission: charged as 18 months, so £1,164 IHS + £558 = £1,722.
- 28 months of permission: charged as 30 months, so £1,940 IHS + £558 = £2,498.
These examples cover one Student-route applicant without priority service or dependants. A one-year course does not necessarily mean 12 months of permission. Confirm the expected additional time before and after the course with your sponsor before choosing an input.
Is IHS paid every year?
The surcharge for the relevant permission is normally paid upfront during the visa application, not as monthly instalments. It is separate from tuition fees and the maintenance funds you must show. Your application calculates the final amount; this page is an estimate.
What about dependants and priority service?
Eligible Student dependants have their own application and healthcare charges. The calculator assumes the same permission length for everyone; use separate estimates if their periods differ. Check dependant eligibility before including family members. Compare the standard and priority processing times before paying for a faster decision.

- Maintenance funds: you must show (not pay) £1,529 per month for London or £1,171 per month elsewhere, for up to 9 months, on top of one year’s tuition. See the financial requirements.
